In his hit single "Crown," UK grime artist Stormzy transfigures the popular Shakespearean phrase "uneasy is the head that wears a crown" from Henry IV into something a bit more catchy: "heavy is the head that wears the crown."
The idiom, which also inspired the name of his sophomore album Heavy Is the Head, represents the "responsibility he feels" as a public figure, and the pressure that comes with fame. After landing a spot on the TIME 2019 Next Generation Leaders list, the rapper wrote on Instagram:
"The thought of being a 'role model' or 'leader' or whatever it is can often feel way, way, way too heavy and too overwhelming and a lot of the time ... I can’t even bare the weight of being myself let alone any of these other titles."
But the grime star born Michael Omari is a trailblazer. Just this year, he became the first black British solo artist to headline Glastonbury and created a scholarship for black students who wish to attend the University of Cambridge.
Stormzy's crown may be heavy, but he wears it well.
The 26-year-old has just embarked on a massive world tour to celebrate his new album. He kicked things off last night at Day 2 of the Virgin Radio RedfestDXB in Dubai, and performed a handful of new songs like "Do Better," "Crown," "Still Disappointed" and the beloved "Vossi Bop." He also performed fan-favorites like "Blinded By Your Grace" and "First Things First."
