Dave Grohl Debuts "Play," Covers Nirvana + More at Christmas Jam

Warren Haynes' one-of-a-kind annual Christmas Jam took place over the weekend (December 7th and 8th) for its 30th year at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, North Carolina. This year's marathon of music featured performances by Dark Side of the Mule, Eric Church, Gov't Mule, and plenty more special guests, including Dave Grohl and friends' debut of his prog-rock instrumental, "Play."

The 23-minute instrumentation was written for Grohl's documentary "Play," a short film where he showcases the magic of becoming a musician. The song was live debuted on December 8th with Them Crooked Vultures bandmate Alain Johannes, Greg Kurstin, Jason Falkner, Barrett Jones, Chris Chaney, and Drew Hester. Grohl handled the drums on the live interpretation.

During the set, Grohl also performed Foo Fighters classic "Times Like These" with Warren Haynes, and "Everlong."

The fun didn't end there. Haynes threw a special "pop up" show at the nearby venue Orange Peel last night (December 9th).

“This is going to be one for the record books, with surprises in store,” an announcement for the concert read.

The set included epochal covers with special guests like Grohl on songs like Nirvana’s “All Apologies”, Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How It Feels”, and The Who’s “Eminence Front." Check out the full setlist below and footage of "All Apologies" below!

Foo Fighters wrapped their year and half long Concrete and Gold Tour back in October. You can read up on all the highlights from that tour on previous posts.

2019 is shaping up to be just as exciting as 2018 for the band. In May, Grohl will return to North Carolina with Foo to headline Epicenter Festival alongside Tool, Live, Bush, Korn, 311 and more.
