King Diamond Redefines Horror on 2019 The Institute Tour!

It’s hard to describe the essence of King Diamond. Sure he's a gifted vocalist, but there’s so much more to the man behind the legendary occult stage makeup. Jumping from project to project, including his role as frontman of heavy metal band Mercyful Fate, King Diamond has displayed his creativity on a number of levels since his start in the music world in the 1970s.

Other than his long standing solo career, Diamond is in fact most known for that very role in Mercyful Fate, a band that has remained loosely together since their formation in 1981. After twenty grueling years, Mercyful Fate has officially announced their first date of a 2020 tour set to kickoff in Europe next summer. Subsequently, the metal icons also confirmed new music to be released in succession with the tour.

In the meantime, King Diamond has kicked off his own solo trek across the United States and Canada for a twenty-three date run. Supported by Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats and Idle Hands as openers, the horror inspired Diamond has thrown together a show worth seeing because it’s exactly that— a show.

King Diamond Tweets About The Institute Tour

Touring in support of his own upcoming solo album The Institute, King Diamond has composed a collective setlist, pulling from a variety of records. Considering he has twelve completed full-studio albums to work with, not including his time working on group projects, it’s easy to understand why Diamond’s setlist is so cleverly put together.

Including the use of pre-recorded tracks to emphasize the horror elements of the show, King Diamond has performed a consistent nineteen-song setlist every night of the tour thus far. Featuring hits like “The Candle,” “A Mansion in Darkness,” “Halloween,” “Welcome Home,” “Sleepless Nights” and “Black Horsemen,” along with the first single off of the new album, “Masquerade of Madness,” this set promises to not disappoint!

However, as expected at a King Diamond show, the night’s entertainment stretches far beyond the music. As a horror metal fiend, King Diamond couldn’t resist structuring the night as a narrative story correlating with the title of his upcoming album The Institute. Harping on asylum themes, this tour has sure screamed horror on every level.

From stabbing a toy doll in the face before throwing it into a casket to wheeling out an elderly asylum patient who was presumably just released from the hospital, King Diamond’s The Institute run has more than delivered on the production end.

Making use of a multi-tiered asylum-themed stage featuring prison cells and solitary rooms, King Diamond and company are quite mobile during the show as actors and dancers dressed as asylum patients roam the stage alongside the band.

And if that’s not enough, fans will at least be in awe of the simpler, more traditional production elements of the show including a systematic light show and more fog than you can imagine.
