Rare Spoilers For Elvis Costello & The Imposters Just Trust Tour

They’re finally back. That’s right, after a long trek across the U.S. with fellow New Wave icons Blondie back in July and August, Elvis Costello & The Imposters have hit the road once again on their 2019 U.S. Just Trust Tour.

Kicking off back on October 23 in Charlottesville, Virginia the Just Trust Tour will hit over twenty cities across the U.S. before coming to a close just before Thanksgiving on November 26 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Of course, with a career spanning nearly five decades, Costello has a lot to work with when it comes to conceptualizing the perfect tour. From his New Wave roots to his more modern twists on punk and pop, Costello has paved the perfect path to flexibility and creativity in design.

Making that idea a reality, Elvis Costello & The Imposters have begun a tour run that defies the expectation, hoping fans will simply “just trust” them when it comes to the tour’s makeup.

However, for those who can’t stand the grueling anticipation, we are here to dish out some key information on the Just Trust Tour. Check out our tour spoilers here!

Is there a meaning behind the name of the tour?
In fact, there is. The Just Trust Tour is named after Elvis Costello & The Attractions’ 1981 album Trust, so expect a few tracks from the record every night. However, in addition, the name of the tour was created as a point of reassurance for fans across the United States. The band coupled the announcement back in June with a statement on the name itself—

“The tour is entitled, ‘Just Trust’ in answer to the musical questions: ‘Will they play my favorite song?,’ or, ‘Are they going to frighten the horses with a lot of excellent songs that are rarely performed?,’ not to mention, ‘Can I expect the hits of yesteryear and those of tomorrow?’ To which we say: Just Trust Elvis Costello and The Imposters.”

Who is the opener?
Elvis Costello & The Imposters. That’s right, expect a full night of Costello classics as there are no openers for the New Wave legend.

Is there a particular theme to the show?
Not exactly. Considering the tour is named after Trust (1981), fans should expect to hear at least a couple of hits off of that album every night. Beyond that, typical to Costello fashion, the setlist is ever-changing, so it’s hard to pinpoint an actual theme for the tour.

You mentioned a changing setlist?
Indeed. Known for constantly keeping the audience on their toes, Elvis Costello & The Imposters have altered their setlist every night of the tour thus far. However, there are a few staples that remain on the set in almost every city. Like Costello and company said themselves, “Just Trust.”

Which songs remain consistent?
So far, there are a group of classics that have made appearances at every show. Some of these favorites include “A Face in the Crowd,” “Alison,” “Clubland,” “Green Shirt,” “Strict Time” and “Watching the Detectives.”

Any deep cuts?
Considering their frequent setlist changes, it isn’t surprising that the band would throw in an occasional deep cut here and there. Since the start of the tour, Elvis Costello & The Imposters have performed some songs that hadn’t been played in years alongside even a track that is completely new to the band. These deep cuts include, “Crawling to the USA,” “Suspect My Tears,” “Watch Your Step,” “Stations of the Cross,” “Little Triggers” and “No Hiding Place.”

What’s production like?
For an act as musically talented and legendary as Elvis Costello, there doesn’t need to be any major production to create a good show. With that being said, the production is actually quite intriguing. While relatively simple overall, the use of light beams and original monitor artwork makes the production stand out both around the band and on the stage itself in a sort of narrative manner.

Should we expect an encore?
It’s a toss up. With a setlist averaging around twenty to twenty-four songs, it would be easy to assume a typical encore format to end the show. However, Costello is the king of surprises when it comes to his performances, and it’s no different with the structure of the setlist either. Of the six shows played on the tour thus far, only two have ended with an encore of one song or more.

Can we see a recent setlist?
Look no further…
