There was a lot to take in after yesterday’s Hella Mega Tour announcement. Not only are three of the biggest alternative/punk bands joining forces for what could be one of the most legendary tours of all time, but Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer also disclosed information about upcoming albums all set to release in the coming months.

But the heart attacks didn’t stop there for the band's cult-like fans. In addition to each also dropping a new single, the legendary bands geared up for a surprise show at Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles the same night. And with less than a twelve hour notice, fans lined up down and around Sunset Blvd to try to get their hands on a lucky wristband which were only sold at the venue’s physical box office.

As you can imagine, the show sold out as quickly as the fans could line up as the Whisky a Go Go has a capacity of only five-hundred. Talk about an intimate show for three bands ready to embark on a stadium-sized tour.

With two hours until show time, fans crowded into the small club at six o’clock, some close enough to the barely platformed stage to take in the sweat and spit of frontmen Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Stump and Billie Joe Armstrong. Lucky fans indeed.

Prepared to mimic the same lineup slotted for the Hella Mega Tour, Weezer was first to take the stage with a ten-song setlist featuring some of their biggest hits like “Buddy Holly,” “Beverly Hills” (fitting for the occasion), “Undone - The Sweater Song” and “Say It Ain’t So.”

Weezer ended off their set with their most-played song live “Buddy Holly,” but not before live debuting their new single “The End of The Game” which was released only twelve hours before its premiere. What a special moment.

Continuing to follow the upcoming tour’s bill, Fall Out Boy headed out on stage after a thirty minute equipment breakdown and setup changeover. With a bit of a shorter setlist lined up, the guys were ready to bring the energy. It began to look like a bit of a battle of the bands-type format, but in the best way possible.

From “Centuries” and “Sugar, We’re Going Down” to “Dance, Dance” and “Saturday,” FOB brought out hit after hit in their eight-song setlist. But similarly, to Weezer, the best part of their set came with the live debut of their new single “Dear Future Self (Hands Up).”

Finally hitting the stage by ten o’clock were the godfathers of punk rock. Green Day strutted out on stage ready to perform together for the first time in almost two full years. Ironically, that’s a relatively short period of time for the guys as previous years have induced much longer hiatuses in between tours and albums. Luckily, this time is different and after what they deemed to be their favorite tour ever back in 2016, is now just a blissful memory as they look forward to upping the stakes this time around, and last night was no different.

Opening with “American Idiot,” it was clear Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, Tre Cool and company were ready to bring the hits to their first show back. Touching on every era of Green Day, the band continued with songs like “Brain Stew,” “Bang Bang,” “Know Your Enemy,” “When I Come Around” and “Minority” before ending the show with an extended version of the already ten-minute long hit “Jesus of Suburbia.” Although, extended doesn’t say much when it comes to Billie Joe Armstrong as the legendary frontman is known as one of the greatest performers when it comes to reeling in a crowd at all costs.

Additionally, like their night’s predecessors, Green Day too live debuted their new single “Father of All…” However, unlike Weezer and FOB, they played the song twice (not uncommon of Green Day) after Billie Joe declared that the song was too short to only play once. Sounds like a normal Green Day show to us.
