Elton John Kicks Off Leg of Farewell Tour With Freddie Tribute

It’s been over a year and a half since Sir Elton John announced his final solo tour. Officially kicking off back in the fall of 2018, The Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour has made its way around North America and Europe for a total of over one hundred shows so far. Scheduled to end sometime in 2021, fans are still waiting to hear when and where the last leg of the tour will take place. However, no matter what, crowds will flock to get one last chance to see the Rocketman live.

Coinciding with the release of his own biopic Rocketman, Elton has provided fans with the greatest farewell they could have possibly imagined. And while he has admitted to loving the road, the vocal legend is more than ready to spend time with his growing sons and longtime husband and famous filmmaker David Furnish. However, not before he is satisfied in his own farewell.

Following the tour announcement last winter, Elton made a touching statement regarding his love of performing and dedication to his fans.

“Performing live fuels me and I’m ecstatic and humbled to continue to play to audiences across the globe. I plan to bring the passion and creativity that has entertained my fans for decades to my final tour.”

Fortunately, that passion and creativity was recreated last night at the kickoff of the second North American leg in Salt Lake City, Utah. Despite a never-ending list of hits to choose from, Sir Elton John has pieced together the perfect setlist for his Farewell Tour. Excluding a couple of minor changes in set order, the setlist has remained practically the same throughout each leg of the tour thus far.

Opening the show with a surrealistic version of “Bennie and the Jets,” Elton and company set an immediate creative tone for the rest of the night. Sitting atop of a moving grand piano, the Rocketman made his way around the stage, giving the entire arena the best seat in the house. Amongst all the fabulous chaos, it became clear that the concert was much more than a show. Instead, it was a spectacle.

Continuing the set with never-ending hits like “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Rocketman (I Think It’s Going to Be a Long, Long Time),” “Take Me to the Pilot,” “Candle in the Wind” and “Daniel,” Sir Elton was sure to not disappoint on his first night back on the road in almost two months.

With a color explosion serving as his rightful backdrop, Elton and his band took advantage of the entire production full of lights, sparkles, and confetti — talk about the perfect accompaniment to an Elton show.

Yet, one of the greatest parts of the show came during a more tame moment as Sir Elton talked about the Elton John AIDS Foundation, commemorating the late Freddie Mercury on the eve of his birthday. Wishing him an early happy birthday, Elton reminisced on some earlier days with his old friend as he emphasized the success and importance of his foundation and the continual fight against AIDS.

As the show kicked back into gear, Sir Elton Rounded out the first set with hits off of the Rocketman soundtrack such as “The Bitch Is Back,” “Crocodile Rock,” “I’m Still Standing” and “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” before bowing during a premature goodbye.

After a few brief minutes and a quick wardrobe change, the knight himself returned back to stage sporting a bedazzled tailcoat that only he could pull off. Performing a two-song encore featuring his most-played song live “Your Song” along with the title track of the tour “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” Elton finished off the night with a confetti blast powerful enough to reach the nosebleeds of the eighteen-thousand capacity arena.
