A Dive into Elton John's 2019 Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour

In the midst of a seemingly non-stop farewell tour, Sir Elton John continues to put on the fabulous show he originally promised night after night. Having already performed over one-hundred shows on the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour thus far, Elton is presumably only half way through his final run set to wrap sometime in 2021.

With a career spanning over five decades, it’s no surprise the piano guru knows how to put on a performance at this point. In fact, the legendary singer has been entertaining audiences around the world since the very start of his career by means of his over-the-top antics and pure, undeniable talent.

Of course, it’s no different on his current farewell tour. And although his performances have put his musicianship at the forefront, it wouldn’t be an Elton John show without an extravagant accompaniment.

From the marvelous production to the unmistakable costumes, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour is a masterpiece in and of itself. So brace yourself as we reveal some of the best highlights of the tour thus far.

Alongside the endless display of colors radiating off of the set pieces, props and never-ending confetti explosion, there lurks a more unsuspecting piece of production that trumps the rest every night — the backdrop monitor.

What’s often used as a way to give fans a better view of the on-stage talent, is utilized in a much more creative fashion on this tour. Featuring numerous videos complementary to the songs being performed in front of it, the large backdrop monitor becomes a piece of art itself. From the depiction of the city of Los Angeles during “Tiny Dancer” and the glamorous drag queens during “The Bitch is Back” to the Elton fan imitations in “Crocodile Rock” and vintage fight scenes during “Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting),” the backdrop monitor has earned its rightful place as one of the most important aspects of the tour thus far.

However, as great of an element as the backdrop is, Elton’s farewell tour wouldn’t be complete without a costume change or two...or four. Prior to the start of the tour, Elton opened up about his famous looks over the years and why he will always stick to his flashy style.

“Look, I’m not Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart or David Bowie, tearing from one end of the stage to the other. I’m always bloody stuck at the piano, aren’t I? Clothes have always had to be part of the show that I put on. They made me memorable.”

Opening the show in his most formal attire, Elton sports one of his choice bedazzled tailcoats before changing into a colorful suit highlighting just as many sparkles, minus the tail. After exiting the stage for a brief intermission before the encore, Elton returns to the stage with a fabulous dressing gown of his choosing which secretly hides his final costume change of the night — a silk tracksuit. And don’t worry — if those antics aren’t enough, I can assure you that the setlist is. Performing additional hits like “Bennie and the Jets,” “Rocketman (I Think It’s Going to Be a Long, Long Time),” “Candle in the Wind,” “Daniel,” “I’m Still Standing” and “Your Song,” it would be almost impossible for anyone to criticize this show.
