Arcade Fire Played "Funeral" In Full For The First Time

Arcade Fire surprised fans last night and played Funeral in its entirety for the first time since the album’s release in 2004.

The band opened their show with Funeral’s 10 songs before delving into the rest of their 23-song set.

An Arcade Fire fan account predicted that the band would play the album live twice more on this tour, supposedly during two Berkeley shows, and Arcade Fire confirmed the news on their own Twitter account:

"We will be performing Funeral in its entirety for the first time at our three California shows. Wanted the first night to be a surprise, but I guess the surprise is out."

After performing “Neighborhood #1,” “Neighborhood #2” and “Une année-lumière” consecutively, the audience at L.A.’s Greek Theatre realized what was happening. Win Butler announced to the sold-out audience, “We’re not sentimental, but it’s just been 14 years since Funeral so we felt like playing it.”

That’s the kind of spontaneity we know and love.

A fan captured the band performing "Wake Up:"

The set also marked the first time Funeral's "In the Backseat" was played live on this tour.

During the second set, the band played a collection of tracks ranging from 2017's Everything Now to 2007's Neon Bubble. Fans heard favorites like "My Body Is A Cage," "Intervention" and "Ready to Start."

In other Arcade Fire news: the band just released a new music video for a new remix of 2017’s “Peter Pan” off the band's Grammy-nominated international No. 1 album, Everything Now.

The video features a new take on Disney's Peter Pan and Wendy, complete with neon tinged nightscapes and kinetically charged dance sequences.
