See Our Setlist Spoilers for Alice In Chains 2019 Summer Tour!

Originally formed in the late 80s, Alice In Chains have been sharing their industrial grunge roots with fans across multiple generations for over three decades. That alone qualifies them as rock royalty in our books, never mind the eleven Grammy Award nominations and three multi-platinum albums.

However, despite such acclaim, the band’s journey up until this point has been a bit difficult. Known for taking a few long hiatuses over the years, the grunge pioneers have had to face their fair share of challenges when it comes to sustaining a successful act. The most notable difficulty came when founding frontman Layne Staley passed away from a drug overdose in 2002. Fortunately, the band vowed to not let the tragedy stop them from pushing forward as they hired current frontman William DuVall in 2005.

Since the change, the band has been thriving in the music world, releasing three studio, one live and one compilation album with DuVall leading the way. Their most recent album Rainier Fog was released in 2018 and hit the No. 1 spot on the Rock, Hard Rock and Alternative Albums charts.

Letting the album lead the way, Alice In Chains have been touring in support of Rainier Fog virtually non stop since 2018, including their current co-headlining tour with hard rock royalty, Korn. The 2019 co-headliner kicked off back in July and is currently scheduled to wrap on September 4 in Mountain View, California.

Speaking on behalf of this nonstop touring cycle, Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell had a few things to say regarding the current tour at the beginning of the month.

“We’re coming to the end of the cycle. It’s been a great run. We made a really great record that we’re proud of, and people have responded to it really positively... We’ve gone around the globe a few times already; this was basically our second trip around everywhere.”

So what does this current tour look like? Well, we’re here to shed some light on what fans should expect to see from Alice In Chains as they continue to trek across North America on their 2019 tour. Check out all of our tour spoilers here!

Is there an opener?
Yes! Crazy enough with two co-headlining bands, there are still opening acts at every show. Underoath has made an appearance at every show alongside hip hop group Ho99o9 and rock band Fever 333 at varying cities.

Who goes on first?
Of the two co-headliners, Alice In Chains takes the stage first. But in true co-headliner fashion, both Alice In Chains and Korn have an equal setlist when it comes to song count, something that is often under-appreciated on co-headlining tours.

Has Alice In Chains' setlist changed throughout the tour?
Sort of. While not necessarily radical, Alice In Chains has swapped a couple of songs here and there to keep fans on their toes at every show. However, there are a group of songs that have remained on the setlist at nearly every show on their 2019 tour thus far including “Check My Brain,” “Would?,” “Again,” “Man in the Box,” “No Excuses” and “Rooster.”

Which album(s) are they most pulling from?
Considering this tour is partially in promotion of their most recent album, Rainier Fog, they have been pulling somewhat heavily from that album. However, Dirt, Facelift and Jar of Flies are also utilized often when it comes to choosing songs to put on the setlist at every venue.

Which songs have been used the most off of Rainier Fog?
Since the setlist does change on a semi-regular basis, not all of the songs they have played off of Rainier Fog have been played consistently throughout the tour. The three songs they have played the most number of times off of the album include “The One You Know,” “Never Fade” and “Rainier Fog.”

Any deep cuts?
Not very many. The one song they have pulled from way deep into their catalogue is “God Smack” off of their 1992 4x platinum album Dirt. Since 1993, Alice In Chains have only performed the song five times with one of them being on their 2019 tour. Other than that, you won’t find many unusual picks on their fifteen-song setlist.

What about covers?
Not surprisingly, Alice In Chains have not performed any covers on the tour thus far. Expect a full setlist of Alice In Chains originals. The only reference to a cover happens to be during a guest appearance (more on that below).

Any surprises?
There has been a surprise or two when it comes to Alice In Chains performances throughout the tour. The most impactful moment of every show has been the touching tributes to the late Layne Staley. Since his passing in 2002, the band has made an effort to frequently honor him and his family. On this tour, the band dedicates every performance of “Nutshell” to Staley with the help of thousands of fans’ flashlights in the audience. It is a special moment for all parties involved, including special guest and Alexisonfire guitarist Dallas Green who joined the band on stage for the tribute in Toronto honoring his own original cover of the song.
