Concert of Day: Metallica's 21-Song Set at Irvine Meadows in 1989

Yesterday's (July 27) Metallica Monday's gifted fans with a revisit to their final show on their epic 1989 Damaged Justice Tour. The tour was in support of their album ...And Justice for All, which was the first to feature the line up of James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich, and new bassist Jason Newsted (Cliff Burton's replacement).

The show takes place on September 23, 1989 at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in California and features a 21-song setlist that showcases songs off their first four albums, covers, and epic solos.

The main set features 11-songs, opening up with "Blackened" and hitting on all corners of their career with performances of "For Whom the Bell Tolls," "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," "The Four Horsemen," "Master of Puppets," "Seek & Destroy" and set closer "...And Justice for All."

Next, Metallica fires off their first encore, of THREE! The first carries three songs, plus a guitar solo that weaves in an instrumental jam of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing."

The second encore is made up of mostly cover songs, including a partial version of "The Wait" by Killing Joke, "Last Caress" by Misfits, and half of "Am I Evil?" by Diamond Head - where the band does a switch-eroo with James on drums, Lars on vocals, Kirk on bass, and Jason on guitar!

The iconic show comes to an end with the last encore, where Metallica performs two songs - "Motorbreath" and lastly, a cover of "Breadfan" by Budgie.
