Sum 41 Release New Album, "Order In Decline"

Canadian rockers Sum 41 are veering further and further away from their pop-punk roots.

They've just released their seventh studio album, Order in Decline, which features previously released singles "Out for Blood," "A Death in the Family," "Never There" and "45 (A Matter of Time)."

Members Deryck Whibley (rhythm guitar, vocals), Dave Baksh (guitar, backing vocals), Jason McCaslin (bass), Tom Thacker (lead guitar, keys) and Frank Zummo (drums) have kissed their "Fat Lip" days goodbye and have entered a darker and more cynical stage, with no signs of turning back.

2011's Screaming Bloody Murder offered fans a first glimpse at the band's potential metal cred, steering away from 2007's alt-rock experiment, Underclass Hero. It was put on the back burner, though, following a massive line-up change and Whibley's alcohol-related hospitalization due to organ failure.

The band came back strong with 2016's 13 Voices, which marked a distinctive stylistic change that's carried over to their new release.

Order in Decline continues to push the envelope with a harder edge. The album opens with an eerie piano trickle that transforms into a drum and bass-driven "Turning Away." Throughout the album's 10 tracks, the band prove they're out for blood with an aggressive and bombastic track of the same name, followed by heavy, call-to-arms-esque tracks "The New Sensation" and "A Death In The Family." They channel some Metallica vibes in "The People Vs..." and close with a somber and poignant "Catching Fire."

Sum 41, "Turning Away"

Order in Decline offers a newfound maturity for Sum 41, best seen in Whibley's vocal progression. He juxtaposes between guttural screams and softer croons, and covers some pretty angsty subject matter. "45 (Matter of Time)" is a politically-charged banger that points fingers without naming names and "Never There" is a wistful, orchestra-backed piano ballad about Whibley's estranged father. "I don't need you by my side," he sings, "I think by now I'm doing fine myself on my own."
