This Day 2001: Tool Live Debut 7 "Lateralus" Songs at Kickoff Set

2001 was 19 years ago, feel old yet? It was a year that delivered many great albums, ones we can't stop spinning to this day. One of those being Lateralus by Tool, which dropped on this very day, May 15th, in 2001.

The band's third studio album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and to celebrate the 19th anniversary of that LP, we're looking back at the record-release show held at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, Georgia. It also happened to be the "Lateralus" Tour kickoff.

This show was monumental in Tool history because fans got treated to not one, not two, but SEVEN live debuts off of the new album. It took up half the setlist, which clocked in at 14 songs.

The first debut came right away with opening song, "The Grudge," which is also the album opener. After performing some older favorites like "Stinkfist" and "Forty Six & 2," the next live debut came - "Schism." This track has since become a Tool staple - since the debut it's ranked as their third most performed song.

Their other live debuts included "Disposition," "Reflection," "Parabol," "Parabola," and set finale, "Lateralus." "Parabola" now ranks as the band's 10th most performed song, and "Lateralus" ranks as number 6.

Tool weaved in more of their other popular licks into the set like "Ænema," "Sober," and "Opiate," all which fall within their top most performed songs. "Sober" and "Opiate" haven't seen a setlist since 2018, however. They also performed "Prison Sex," but this song has not been played since that 2001 tour.

The "Lateralus Tour" lasted about a year and Tool wouldn't hit the stage again until four years later (2006) for the "10,000 Days Tour."
