Dave Matthews Played 10-Song Set For Pay It Forward Live Webcast

The 2020 coronavirus pandemic has hit all industries hard, particularly small businesses. Verizon are doing their part with their entertainment series dubbed Pay It Forward Live to support those small businesses affected by COVID-19, and Dave Matthews returned last night, May 28th, to headline the event.

During the series, viewers are encouraged to do what they can by supporting local businesses in their communities, while Verizon donates $10 for every use of the hashtag #PayItForwardLive in addition to its existing pledge of $7.5 million.

Matthews started his set by saying some very important words about George Floyd, who was killed on May 25th by white Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

“George Floyd is one name that has been in my mind the last few days, and there are peaceful protests and there's some rioting and there's a lot of angry people. But all of this that's coming right now started, we have to remember, with excessive force, lethal force, against a man who was handcuffed on the ground and had the life crushed out of him. He had someone kneeling on his throat and he was killed in broad daylight, unnecessarily — completely unnecessarily, from what I can see, because if you’ve got someone handcuffed and you’ve got them on the ground, you don't need to crush them."

Matthews continued to speak his peace a bit longer, adding "One part of a population of a country that claims to be free and believe in freedom, one part of that population should not live in fear of the authorities, no matter who they are. They live in fear because the color of their skin. It is unjustifiable. It is shameful. And that's all I'm going to say. It is shameful.”

After using his platform to bring light to the matters at hand, Matthews went into his hour-long 10 song set, kicking it off with "Save Me."

The set included six Dave Matthews Band songs like "Satellite," "Come Tomorrow" and "Crush." He also worked in a cover of Tex Ritter's "Rye Whiskey." Other solo songs included "Stay or Leave" and set finale, "Windows."
