Sammy Hagar & The Circle Are Wrapping Up Space Between Tour

At 71, legendary vocalist Sammy Hagar has still got it.

The Red Rocker– who rose to prominence in the '70s as a part of the rock band Montrose– has worn many hats in his four-decade career. After launching a solo stint with 1984's "I Can't Drive 55," he replaced David Lee Roth as the lead vocalist of Van Halen in 1985, but left in 1996. He returned a few years later for a band reunion in 2003-2005 and has since spearheaded a few rock supergroups and promoted his own tequila brand, Cabo Wabo.

His current all-star rock and roll ensemble, The Circle, consists of Hagar on vocals, former Van Halen member Michael Anthony on bass, Jason Bonham on drums and Vic Johnson on guitar.

The band has been touring North America on their Space Between Tour in support of their debut album of the same name which dropped earlier this month.

"The album is really about money, greed, enlightenment and truth," Hagar said of Space Between.

"Money is not the problem. Money is beautiful; You can heal the sick, you can feed the poor, you can stop a war with money. It’s greed that’s the problem. So you shouldn’t hate somebody just ’cause they’re rich, especially if they didn’t f*** anybody out of (the money) and if they do something good with it. Go guys like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, you can’t be mad at them for being so rich. These guys build hospitals, build schools for children and other countries. Those are good guys. That’s what you can do with money.”

Part of the album's message, he adds, is to encourage charity from its listeners. "There's things you can do to help your fellow man and not just sit around and bitch about everything," he said. "I really do hope that it changes some people, maybe gives them some hope."

The Space Between Tour launched April 19 in Reno, Nevada and has just four shows left before wrapping June 7 in Tinley Park, Illinois.

Though The Circle has a history of covering many a Zeppelin song on tour, they've been trimming it down to just one per night to make room for their own material. They do, however, draw from each members' expansive repertoires.

The lengthy setlist includes Hagar's solo work ("Heavy Metal," "I Can't Drive 55," "There's Only One Way To Rock") as well as a variety of Van Halen cuts from Hagar's most celebrated era with the band ("Poundcake," "Finish What Ya Started," "When It's Love").

The Circle also plays Space Between songs "Can't Hang," "Trust Fund Baby," "Devil Came to Philly" and "Affirmation."

Check out the setlist from their most recent show (May 30) at Foxwoods' Grand Theater in Connecticut.
