Work From Home: King Buzzo on New Solo EP and Staying Safe in LA

Buzz Osborne AKA King Buzzo is nothing if not prolific. Last time we spoke with Osborne, he was out with his primary punk band Melvins. This time he had some solo projects on the docket, including a tour with his pal and collaborator Trevor Dunn. Like everything else in the touring world, it has been cancelled and his album release date is pushed from May to August 14th.
Last week we had a virtual catch up with the singer, from our respective bunkers in LA. He told us how he spends his quarantine days, all of the projects he has in various stages of completion and how he hopes this all turns out. Watch him in our latest episode of Tour Update Work From Home:
Work From Home: King Buzzo on New Solo EP and Staying Safe in LA

Daily quarantine life:
“I’m OK. I’m in Los Angeles. Reading a lot. Listening to some music, watching a ton of movies. But usually when I’m watching movies I’m busy doing something else. Doing walks around the neighborhood, that’s about it. Honestly, doing what they’re saying, what they’re suggesting. Not doing anything stupid."

How Gift of Sacrifice came to be:
“I did a record about 5 or 6 yeas ago, This Machine Kills Artists. It was me on acoustic guitar and I realized it was time for me to do something like that again, so I started recording a record. This time around I wanted to add my buddy Trevor Dunn who plays in M. Bungle and Phantomas. He came out, we had a couple of days—I pretty much had my whole record done and I go, ‘Well, why don’t you try playing on one of these songs?’ And he did and it was so great, this is really adding something to it that I hadn’t quite considered. So then I just kept having him, on the two days he was there, play on more and more songs. And eventually he had played on most of the record. As well as the EP that just came out, actually."
On writing music during the pandemic:
"I don’t know, maybe. We already have a bunch of stuff recorded and a new album coming out. There’s no lack of that in our department. We have a new album coming out, we have a reissue of a live record that’s going to come out in hyper-limited edition. We were working on a Melvins 1983 record. But those were in the works already, long before this hit. That’s just kinda how we’ve always done it. My acoustic record, like I said, recorded the vast majority of that like a year ago. So its always new to everyone except us."

Post-pandemic predictions:
"There’s a part of me that’s very optimistic. We’ll help each other out, be very supportive because honestly I think there’s way more good people in the world than there are bad. Sure there’s bad people who will take advantage but there’s more good people and those are the people who are going to rebuild everything."
