Maynard James Keenan, the lead singer of Tool, turns 56 years old today. The lyricist has paved a lasting legacy for the rock band, in more ways than one. As frontman for Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, Keenan has marked himself as one of music’s most enigmatic figures.

To commemorate the iconic frontman’s birthday, we’re bringing it back to one of Tool’s setlists performed on this day in 1994. The BDAY show took place at The Edge venue in Fort Lauderdale, Florida - one of their 200 shows in support of their iconic Undertow tour. The tour featured tracks from their 1993 debut full-length album of the same name. This very record paved the way for what would become one of the best in their discographies, 27 years later.

Tool dished out a classic from their 1992 Opiate EP, “Cold and Ugly,” as their show opener. They jumped into eight tracks from the Undertow album, including staples such as “Intolerance,” “Prison Sex,” and “Swamp Song.” They dabbled in some deep cuts, too, like “4°” and show closer “Bottom,” which has only been performed by the band 73 times, the last time being in 2017.

Most of their setlists on this tour averaged around 9 songs. There were hardly any covers, but about 9 of the shows included a cover of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter."

Tool's 2020 North American tour dates from April 16 to June 23 have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Fans with previously purchased tickets will be honored for the rescheduled show dates. The band has yet to announce when those rescheduled dates will be, though updates can be found on their website and Instagram.

A special congratulations and thank you goes to Maynard Keenan on this day. Without him, the world of metal and rock would be significantly different.
