Remember 2006? Tool fans do, because after four years of waiting, the band was finally kicking off a new tour. The tour was in support of their highly anticipated album 10,000 Days, and it all began on this day, April 30th, with a headlining performance at Coachella Music Festival 2006.
10,000 Days is Tool's fourth studio album, and it was their first new music since 2001's Lateralus. After they released the record that May, we didn't get new material from the rock icon's until 2019's Fear Inoculum.
But 14 years ago, fans flocked to Coachella to eagerly wait for the band's first onstage appearance since November 2002. At the time, Coachella was still only a two-day festival and one weekend only. Tool was the big headliner for Day Two, alongside Massive Attack, Madonna, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It was their second time performing at the massive music festival.
They hit the main stage with an 11-song set, a bit shorter than the average 13-song setlists that would follow for the entirety of the tour. After opening with "Stinkfist," they gifted fans with the live debut of "The Pot," the first of three live debuts that night.
The other debut came soon after with "Jambi," and the final one appeared toward the end of the set with "Vicarious." Since its live debut, "Jambi" has become one of Tool's setlist staples, with over 400 performances to date. "Vicarious" follows with over 350 performances to date. "The Pot" became more of a deep cut at first, but then had a resurgence of plays on their Fear Inoculum Tour, now nearing 150 performances to date.
The rest of their Coachella setlist was made up of songs off Lateralus and Ænima. "Forty Six & 2," "Schism," "Eon Blue Apocalypse," and "Sober" were all weaved into their set. They ended the set with "Ænima." Check out the entire setlist below.
The tour got underway a couple nights later, on May 2nd in Seattle, where they added two more live debuts off 10,000 Days to the sets - "Lost Keys (Blame Hofmann)" and "Rosetta Stoned." Neither of those songs, however, are performed as often as the three that Tool debuted at Coachella 2006.
Flash forward to 2020 - Tool still had another leg of their Fear Inoculum Tour left, but the dates are indefinitely postponed while the COVID-19 crisis continues to keep the world on pause. Make sure to check up on their website for any official news and updates.
