Dropkick Murphys Live Debut 3 Songs During Livestream Concert

St. Patrick's Day 2020 — not exactly what we were all expecting even just a few short weeks ago. With tours being postponed and cancelled left and right, it was no surprise when Dropkick Murphys were forced to reschedule their 2020 Boston Blowout run.

Fortunately, despite the changes, the Boston natives were not ready to give up altogether, especially considering it would have been the first time the band didn’t play St. Patrick’s Day weekend in 24 years. Yes, you’re reading that correctly. What else would you expect from the Celtic punk band?

With all of this in mind, the guys found a more creative way to ensure that their show would go on — a livestream. That’s right, following in the footsteps of artists like John Legend and Ben Gibbard from Def Cab for Cutie, Dropkick Murphys decided to step into the virtual age and allow fans all across the world to be a part of their special St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

So what then did this show really look like? Well, with the help of a local Boston tech company, PEGA, Dropkick Murphys were able to produce a high quality production at an undisclosed location consisting of a monitor backdrop, full lighting system, a multi-camera shooting setup, and high quality audio, even over livestream.

With a room full of a couple of crew members, we have to admit that the show was definitely different in regard to how the band interacted with the pseudo audience. However, the way lead singers Ken Casey and Al Barr engaged with the cameras and even their crew members at times, created a sense of intimacy that you can’t always replicate in a larger venue setting.

Other than a few minor nuances that we quickly adjusted to, the show was everything you would expect from Dropkick Murphys, and more.

Frequenting the banjo, accordion and mandolin, the sound was fully Celtic for the St. Patrick’s Day theme. Of course, their naturally Irish sound is almost always apparent in the majority of their tracks anyways.

Taking advantage of the livestream format, the guys played a 28-song set consisting of a handful of covers, amongst originals pulled from across their repertoire of albums. Altogether, the show totaled over two hours in length and ultimately resulted in a performance that most viewers will never forget during a difficult time across the globe.

Dropkick Murphys Setlist 03/17/20

Coupled with well-known covers like “The Irish Rover,” “Black Velvet Band,” Pete St. John’s “The Fields of Athenry,” The Crickets’ “I Fought the Law,” “Rocky Road to Dublin” and a tribute to Italy in Rogers & Hammerstein’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” Dropkick Murphys pulled together a set full of classics for the Irish-American celebration.

Including other hits like “The Boys Are Back,” “Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ya,” “Going Out in Style,” “Worker’s Song,” “The State of Massachusetts,” “Rose Tattoo” and “I’m Shipping Up to Boston,” the setlist was primed for the holiday festivities.

But what would be a historic event without a surprise or two along the way? Well, Dropkick Murphys didn’t disappoint in that regard either. Towards the end of the show, the Bostonians live debuted three unreleased songs including “Mick Jones Nicked My Pudding,” “Queen of Suffolk County” and “Burn It to the Ground.”

And to make things even more interesting, Ken Casey even admitted that a couple of the new tracks will be included on an upcoming album. Talk about a more than eventful few virtual hours.
