Dave Matthews Plays 8-Song Set During Pay It Forward Live

It didn’t take long for this livestream trend to pick up. With companies all around the world hosting their own livestream events, meetings and now concerts, technology has become useful in not only normalizing the current chaos, but also in being a mode of change.

In an attempt to help small businesses, Verizon has started their own recurring online series entitled Pay It Forward Live during which acts will livestream a live performance from their own home or equivalent for a shortened set.

During each set, fans will have the opportunity to tag their favorite local businesses on Twitter, encouraging Verizon to donate on their behalf. Altogether, Verizon will donate $2.5 million per week to support those tagged businesses and another $2.5 million to Local Initiatives Support Corporation, an organization that supports community development initiatives across the United States.

To kick off this exciting effort, legendary singer/songwriter Dave Matthews took to the “stage” for an 8-song set last night. Featuring mainly Dave Matthews Band originals, the hour-long performance allowed for some crucial down time during which Dave himself expressed his own support towards small businesses.

Verizon Tweets About Dave Matthews 'Pay It Forward Live' Performance

Mentioning his favorite local coffee shops, the Seattle native asked viewers to consider creative ways to help their own favorite small businesses in areas all across the United States and beyond. Online tip jars, advance purchases and open tabs were just some of his suggestions along the way.

Of course, in between the wise banter, Dave took advantage of his small setup — an acoustic guitar, recording microphone, ukulele and untouched piano backdrop — to play a variety of songs across his large catalogue of music.

From hits like “Dancing Nancies,” “Grey Street” and “Don’t Drink the Water” to deep cuts such as “Mercy,” “Virginia in the Rain” and “Sweet,” Matthews seemed quite intentional in song choice, playing tracks that mirror our current uneasy world. But what else would you expect from the artist who hand picks each setlist from night-to-night on tour?

Although the entire performance was more than impactful, there was no song that stood out as much as the live debut of an untitled track that discusses the state of uncertainty and chaos during a traumatic event or war. Singing the lyrics “singing from the windows,” Matthews may be referring to the recent viral videos of neighbors singing to each other from their balconies across the globe.

It seems he can’t get much closer to the times than that very statement. Just as those people came together in their respective areas in the name of music, we too came together to watch the first of many livestreams to come from Pay It Forward Live. And while we couldn’t necessarily see each other, there seems to be some comfort in the fact that the other end of the stream will always remain the same.

Verizon’s new series will stream live every Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m. PT/ 8 p.m. ET on Verizon’s twitter page as well as Yahoo Entertainment.

For now, we owe a huge thank you to Dave Matthews for bringing just a bit of normalcy, and frankly a glimmer of positivity into our homes on another bizarre Tuesday evening. Here's to enjoying it again on demand for the next week on Yahoo Entertainment!
