Fan celebrated earlier this month when Tool won Best Metal Performance at the 2020 Grammy Awards. The track that scored them the honor was “7empest,” the 15 minute plus long closing track from the band’s 2019 album Fear Inoculum. It was also heavily praised by rock critics and publications including Revolver and Loudwire.
The epic song pulls from every single era of Tool’s career, while the seemingly wandering lyrics remain a mystery that the band has no interest in shedding any light on. It was also a track Tool had never teased or played live before the release of Fear Inoculum and that was conspicuously missing from their live show sets. Fans on social media would post before shows about their hopes the band would play the song, with some assuming it would never happen.
Then, Tool’s tour took them to Australia for the first time in six years. And last night, in Sydney, the band finally played “7empest” live on stage. The band has a no-phone policy at shows, but a few fans took their chances in grabbing footage of the historic moment. We just hope MJK and the crew will forgive us if we share one here.
Check out the 15-song setlist from the show here:
There’s no way of knowing if the track will continue to appear on set lists as Tool rounds out their Aussie dates and heads back the US for another leg of their tour and the annual Bonnaroo festival. Your best bet to find out is to grab tickets to one of their live shows while you still can.
