The Beach Boys Roll Out 40-Song Sets on 12 Sides of Summer Tour!

Yes, the lineup may look quite different than it did back in 1961, however The Beach Boys in 2020 are still rolling out their unmatched surfer rock just as flawlessly as they did nearly six decades ago thanks to founding member Mike Love.

While it’s been almost half a century since the legendary California natives jump started an everlasting career, age is but a number to current touring members as The Beach Boys have just kicked off a 2020 leg of their ongoing tour.

Alongside Love is longtime member Bruce Johnston, who originally joined the group back in 1965 to fill-in for a studio-bound Brian Wilson.

Of course, despite the length of their career, it’s no shock that Love and company are back on the road for another round of dates as The Beach Boys have consistently averaged over one-hundred shows a year since the ‘60s. And that trend hasn’t slowed a bit.

Created in support of Love’s most recent album 12 Sides of Summer (2019), the tour of the same name is set to hit cities across North American and Europe through July, taking only a few breaks in between shows.

Love’s newest release is a compilation album of reinvented legendary rock covers alongside The Beach Boys’ classics. And considering the succession of the record and tour, expect many of these fresh takes on hits to be performed live throughout the tour.

Thus far, the band has played four dates from Nevada to Tennessee, originally kicking off the North American leg on February 5.

Of the shows played at the start of the new year, nearly all setlists have been identical, minus a couple of one-off tracks here and there.

Sticking with the classics for much of the night, The Beach Boys have mostly pulled from albums like Surfer Girl (1963), Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!) (1965), The Beach Boys Today! (1965) and Pet Sounds (1966).

Since the setlist averages nearly 40 songs in length, it’s no surprise that the show is split into three acts, including an encore.

With a simple one-monitor backdrop and projection-based lighting setup, The Beach Boys open the first set with a handful of tried and true hits like “Catch a Wave,” “Surfer Girl,” “Good to My Baby,” “When I Grow Up (to Be a Man),” “In My Room” and “I Get Around,” before taking a short break to transition into the second set of the night.

Not to be outdone, set two has consisted of similar reimagined classics, plus a traditional rendition of “Sloop John B.” From “California Girls,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “God Only Knows” to “Sail On, Sailor,” “Help Me, Rhonda” and “Surfin’ USA,” The Beach Boys clearly know exactly how to reel the crowd back in for a second set.

But let’s not forget about the impressive covers along the way as Love and company perform a slew of rock covers over the course of set two such as The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun,” Chuck Berry’s “Rock and Roll Music” and Mike Love’s own “Pisces Brothers.”

Sure to end every night with as much tenacity as the start of the show, The Beach Boys save three of their most popular and frequently-played songs live to round out a three-song encore including “Kokomo,” “Good Vibrations” and “Fun, Fun, Fun.” Talk about a more than catchy way to conclude the iconic surfer rock show.

With practically four months remaining on this 2020 12 Sides of Summer tour, there is still plenty of time to catch The Beach Boys live during the new year. For a full list of dates and ticketing information, visit The Beach Boys’ official website!
