The 61st Grammy Awards Performance Highlights

As to be expected, the 2019 Grammy Awards was chock full of unforgettable performances and exciting moments, which included a musical medley dedicated to the queen of country Dolly Parton. From the award show's most coveted win for Album of the Year, which went to Kacey Musgraves, to Jennifer Lopez's Motown tribute, the 61st Grammy's was firing on all cylinders and truly a night for female power. Here's a recap of some of our favorite moments from last night's musical event:

Kacey Musgraves Takes Home Album of the Year

Kacey Musgraves won Album of the Year for Golden Hour, and it was easy to see this was not something she expected. Noticeably choked up, the county singer explained she never dreamed that her album would be met with,

"such love, such warmth, such positivity, it seriously means the world to me." She continued, "I love country music with everything that I am."

Musgraves also shared the award with her husband Rustin, who she explained helped shaped much of the record's material, as well as her younger sister for shooting and designing all of her album covers. Musgraves took home four awards in total, including Best Country Album, Best Country Song and Country Solo Performance. Prior to her Album of the Year win, the country star did a standout performance of her single, "Rainbow."

Sporting a simple white dress, the performance consisted of minimal piano-and-vocals, which highlighted the purity of Musgraves' voice. The singer was alone onstage aside from a pearlescent grand piano accompanied by Golden Hour co-producer Ian Fitchuk. The stage background featured colorful lighting that gradually changed into a rainbow with the audience breaking into applause just ahead of the final chorus.

Cardi B's Historical Grammy Win

Cardi B made musical history by becoming the first solo woman to win Best Rap Album for her debut, Invasion of Privacy. Also notably shaken by the exciting honor, Cardi thanked a number of people for the creation of her debut album, including her husband, Migos rapper Offset and their daughter Kulture, both of whom helped motivate her to finish the record.

In true Cardi B fashion, she hysterically admitted to how nervous she was during the speech,

"I'm sorry. I just, oh the nerves are so bad. Maybe I need to start smoking weed."

Cardi also shared what it was like learning she was pregnant while putting the album together and how Offset pushed her to finish. "[Offset] was like you're going to do this album. We're going to have this baby and do this album."

Along her emotional acceptance speech, Cardi B did a killer and sensual performance of her latest single "Money," for her first solo performance at the Grammy's! The song opened with a stunning piano prelude by Chloe Flower, Filipino pianist, composer, and activist, ahead of Cardi's arrival to the stage. Sporting a cheetah-printed bejeweled catsuit for a vintage-inspired twist to her recent single, Cardi B moved in sync with her backup dancers and moved towards the top of the crystal-incrusted piano for a fiery dance towards the end of the night.

Dolly Parton's Musical Tribute

One of the night's best performances came from the array of artists that took the stage to pay tribute to the living country legend Dolly Parton. Katy Perry and Kacey Musgraves kicked things off with a rendition "Here You Come Again," before they were joined by Parton wearing a sequined, white dress. Then Parton was joined by her goddaughter Miley Cyrus to sing "Jolene" before Maren Morris came out to help perform "After the Gold Rush." Next came four-some Little Big Town who helped Parton sing her new song from the Netflix film Dumplin, "Red Shoes." The tribute concluded with a grand performance of Parton's mega-hit "9 to 5," which brought back all the performers back to the stage.

Parton was named the Grammys' 2019 MusiCares Person of the Year, in honor of her charity work.

Travis Scott's Grammy's Debut

Performing for his first time on the famous Grammy stage, Travis Scott performed "Mile High" with James Blake and Earth Wind and Fire. The rapper continued the momentum with a rendition of "No Bystanders" off his critically acclaimed album Astroworld, and invited fans on stage to help him perform. It was nothing short of epic!

Scott was nominated for three awards including best rap performance for "Sicko Mode."

Jennifer Lopez's Motown Tribute

J.Lo brought her Las Vegas residency to the Staples Center, full of flare to help pay tribute to music's Motown legends. Lopez's set included, "The Best Things in Life Are Free," "Do You Love Me" and "Please Mr. Postman." Musical legend Smokey Robinson made a surprise appearance onstage to perform "My Girl." Special guests in J.Lo's set also included the night's host Alicia Keys and Ne-Yo. Motown is a record label founded in 1959 that helped black musicians break into mainstream American music.

St. Vincent and Dua Lipa's Steamy Collab

St. Vincent and Dua Lipa may seem like unlikely collaborators, but their performance has been one of the most talked about of the Grammy's. The performance began with St. Vincent singing the night’s Best Rock Song winner, “Masseduction” alone with her guitar, before Dua Lipa joined her for a connective rendition of “One Kiss." The doppelgängers even showed some “Respect” to the late Aretha Franklin with a subtle lyrical addition.

The full list of performers included, Andra Day, Arturo Sandoval, Brandi Carlile, Camila Cabello, Cardi B, Chloe x Halle, Dan + Shay, Diana Ross, Dua Lipa, Fantasia, H.E.R., Janelle Monae, J Balvin, Kacey Musgraves, Lady Gaga and Mark Ronson, Little Big Town, Maren Morris, Miley Cyrus, Post Malone with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Ricky Martin, Shawn Mendes, St. Vincent, Travis Scott, Yolanda Adams and Young Thug.
