Metric Singer Emily Haines Opens a Box of Crap

Emily Haines from the rock band Metric introduces us to the exciting segment “Box of Crap,” a fun, new series that showcases talented musicians opening quite literally a box of crap, filled with random items truly only relatable to our stars. Best known for her work as the lead singer, keyboardist and songwriter of the rock band Metric and a member of Broken Social Scene, Haines introduces us to some of her favorite things, including the book that inspired her middle name, Savitri: A Legend and a Symbol, her least favorite shoes in the world as well as a CD of one of the groups openers for their latest trek.
While it may be hard to find the context to all these unlikely objects, Haines is at the ready to share the significance of each and every item.
“The first thing I pulled out is a Savitri: A Legend and a Symbol, which looks super culty but actually isn’t. This was significant for me because it is my middle name, I was born in New Deli, India and my mother named me after this book. This is very good memories for me, even though he’s giving me kind of a culty vibe.”
Soft Skeleton
“Soft Skelton? I get it, getting all the jokes. The best thing about soft skeleton is I can change my backing band to be anyone, anytime. So at some point it will probably end up being discarded members of Broken Social Scene.”
Crocs
“So random: if you ever see any picture of me shuffling into soundcheck in an arena or something, no crocks, no! It means I’m really depressed and you need to do an intervention.”
Co-headliners Zoé
“Oh, Zoé! This is the band we are bringing on tour, Mexican rock band. Bringing July Talk from Canada, we got Zoé from Mexico, we can all just kind of unite.”
Alter ego
Haines pulls out an orange sweatshirt, “This is my alter ego. Ugh-oh she’s back and she means trouble. Look out. Ahh, I just feel safe now.” Grabbing a metal bat, “This is a thing of beauty. Remember I’m not going to hurt you, I’m just going to protect myself.”
