With 2018 breakout single “Die Young” putting him on the map, twenty-one-year-old rapper Roddy Ricch is back in the spotlight. Ricch’s song “The Box” peaked at #1 On the Billboard Top 100 on January 17, 2020 and has been on the chart for six weeks now.

Born in Compton, California, Rodrick Wayne Moore, Jr. began making his first beats and started recording music at the age of 16, but was rapping as young as 8-years-old.

“I bought some equipment and then I started recording real heavy, in my room, when I was 16. I was just playin’ with it,” said Ricch in an interview with XXL Magazine.

In December 2019 Roddy Ricch released his first full-length studio album Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial, which includes his hit “The Box” and 15 other tracks. Ricch also had a variety of well-known rappers featured on the album, including A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, Meek Mill and Gunna.

Ricch was featured on other rappers’ albums as well including Mustard with their song “Ballin’” and the late Nipsey Hussle with their song “Racks In The Middle.”

These songs were also nominated for Grammy awards giving Ricch three nominations including Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for “Racks In The Middle” and Best Rap/Sung Performance for “Ballin’.”

While Ricch is a rising star he is not in it for fame and doesn’t plan on doing this forever.

In an interview with The Fader Ricch said, “I can’t be, you know, too old for this shit. It’s a young n* game. Once I get to a certain point, I really just want to have so much money that I don’t really have to chase it as much, and I can really just sit back and make the proper business moves to create generational wealth. That’s really what I envision myself doing.”

For now, Roddy Ricch is just at the beginning of his booming music career and seems to be on the rise for even bigger and better things.
