On His Birthday in 2004, Dave Matthews Played 11-Song Set in NYC

Jam rock's favorite Capricorn, Dave Matthews, turns 53 today! Matthews was born on this day in 1967 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He spent most of his young life all over the globe between New York City, England, South Africa and then eventually settling in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1986 where he was immersed into the local music city - and it was history from there.

Dave Matthews Band officially formed in 1991, but Matthews is an accomplished solo artists as well, with two full-length solo albums under his belt, which he performs every-so often. One of those concerts took place on his 37th birthday in 2004, only a few months after his debut 2003 album Some Devil was released, and a year before sophomore album Imagine We Were.

Fans warmed up to Matthews first solo effort as it truly showcased a moodier, singer-songwriter side of him with a fresh new direction.

On January 9th, 2004, Matthews took the stage at The China Club in Manhattan for an incredibly intimate, and private one-off show. Around 200 fans attended and got the opportunity to sing "Happy Birthday to You" to one of their favorite musicians. (Note: The trendy nightclub seems to have closed since 2008.)

Matthews opened up the show with "So Damn Lucky" and performed six songs off Some Devil, including "Oh," "Save Me," "Baby," "Stay or Leave," and ended the main set with album lead single "Gravedigger."

He also worked in solo renditions of DMB songs, performing "Everyday" and "Where Are You Going" during the main portion of the set, and "Bartender" and "Crush" for the encore.
